Gutter guards in Augusta
Fewer ladder trips, fewer clogs. Here's how the main types of guard handle Augusta's pines, oaks and spring pollen.
Types of guards
- Micro-mesh. A fine stainless mesh over the gutter. Generally the best at keeping out pine needles, small debris and shingle grit, and usually the most expensive.
- Perforated metal or vinyl screens. Cheaper, and fine for big leaves, but long pine needles can slip through the holes or lodge in them.
- Reverse-curve or surface-tension covers. Water follows a curved lip into the gutter while debris slides off. They can struggle in very heavy rain and with needles that stick to the lip.
- Foam and brush inserts. Inexpensive and easy to install, but they trap debris and pollen and usually need replacing every few years.
What works under Augusta trees
Pine needles are the hard test. Loblolly and longleaf needles are long and stiff, and they find gaps that maple or oak leaves can't. Spring brings oak tassels and a heavy coat of pine pollen that can film over fine mesh. Ask any company how its guard handles needles specifically, and how the top should be cleaned.
Guards still need some care
No guard is maintenance-free. Most need the top brushed or rinsed once or twice a year, and the gutters underneath should be checked now and then. A guard on a gutter that's undersized or badly sloped won't fix overflow; that needs the gutter itself fixed.
What it costs
Professionally installed guards run roughly $6 to $13 a linear foot, depending on the type, often more for premium micro-mesh systems. See the cost guide.
Hiring tips that apply to any gutter job
- Ask for proof of insurance. Gutter work happens on ladders and roofs; liability coverage protects you if something goes wrong.
- Get the quote in writing. It should list gutter size and material, number of downspouts, whether old gutters are hauled away, and any fascia repair.
- Ask about the warranty. Materials and workmanship are often covered separately.
- Be careful with high-pressure guard sales. Get more than one price, and ask how the guard handles pine needles.
- Watch for storm chasers. After big storms, out-of-town crews knock on doors. Check reviews and insurance before paying anything.
